Utilities say sales of gift cards for bills are up

THE GIFT OF WARMTH: During a holiday season tainted by recession, utility companies reported a boost in programs that enable gift-givers to pay the gas and electric bills of friends, relatives or families. The giver sends the recipient a holiday greeting card with a gift certificate, or the utility company notifies the customer that their bill will be credited.

UTILITY TRUMPS LUXURY: Luxury and electronic goods saw double-digit sales declines this holiday season as unemployment reached a 15-year high and the economy crumbled. Some consumers opted for practical gifts, like paying a loved one's utility bill.

YEARLONG GIFT: Most utility companies with gift programs maintain their program year-round, so gift givers can continue to pass along warmth and light well after the holidays. Inquire with your local utility company to see if they offer a similar program.
