Wisconsin Power and Light Co. has acquired a natural gas-fired electric plant in the Town of Neenah.

WPL is a subsidiary of utility Alliant Energy. Alliant Energy Resources LLC is an Alliant division that owns unregulated assets, including the plant, which operated under federal oversight. Up until a May 2008 We Energies purchased power from it.

The plant has operated as a merchant plant since then, meaning power from it went into the main grid for anyone to use.

Alliant Energy Resources transferred the 300-megawatt plant over to WPL in a $92 million transfer that closed Monday. The plant will provide power during peak energy use periods on hot summer days.
