Shares of some top gold companies were up at the close of trading:
Barrick Gold rose $1.45 or 4.3 percent, to $35.00.
Gold Fields rose $.49 or 4.1 percent, to $12.54.
Goldcorp rose $1.54 or 4.4 percent, to $36.29.
Newmont Mining rose $1.31 or 3.2 percent, to $42.18.
