Stalking Corn

(March 17, 1999) -- You can always tell how the corn crop is going by mid-season based on the height of the stalks, the color, and the size of the leaves and, subsequently, the size of the corn hiding in there. When you see the crop is high and green that makes you think it'll have a strong corn yield. Usually that's the case, but not always. Sometimes a stalk will look healthy as a horse but it won't have much corn of any value on it. Sometimes whole rows of stalks are that way. Sometimes something makes them rotten. Looking at the surface only tells you so much.
