The Soil and the Season

(April 7, 1999) -- The soil appears to be in good condition for the season. You can never be sure how it'll come out following winter, and you can only do so much for it in the fall. That's the soil. Then there's the season.

Spring sneaks up on you and there is always more work than you thought. You can only do so much of it in winter, though, so you can never be prepared enough whatever you do.

In both cases you need to take what you're given come spring and work with it. Preparing helps as much as it can, but you can never know how good things will really be when the winter days end and the real season begins.

The S&P rose 0.68%.
