More Inventions

by Harry Jones

(April 9, 1999) -- Blue jeans were invented in the 1870s. I've been wearing them ever since. Ready-made clothes were invented in the 1860s. Dry cleaning was invented that decade, too. Nobody foresaw this because the Ouija board wasn't invented until 1910. (Lucinda claims that my sense of humor lacks wit.) General credit cards were invented in the 1950s. Mutual funds became popular in the 1970s, just after TV dinners were invented.

What value does history serve?

The S&P rose a fraction Friday and for the week gained a strong 4.22%. It's been a good time to be an index fund investor. It's always a good time, compared to 80% of mutual funds.
