Year-to-Date Returns for Various Dow Strategies

Updated monthly. Last updated: 12/31/99

Returns below are total year-to-date returns through the date above for stocks selected by each Dow strategy at the close of trading December 31, 1998. Each strategy holds the stocks for one year then selects a new portfolio based on the current stock selection. For the stocks that would go in a portfolio started today, see the Today's Stock Lists page.

Total returns are adjusted for splits and include dividends, acquisitions, spin-offs, etc. Year-to-date returns for all 30 Dow stocks are at the bottom of the page.

For more information about each of the strategies listed below (including their 25 year average annual return), see the October 28 Foolish Four Portfolio report: Variations on Variations.

YTD returns for some major indices:

All Dow Stocks: 22.28%
S&P 500: 20.74%
Russell 2000 19.62%

Note: Because the Dow and S&P returns shown above and the individual stock returns below include dividends, they may be slightly higher than other year-to-date returns you see published.

* Please note: The returns shown here will not necessarily match the returns of the Foolish Four Portfolio or other portfolios due to different start dates. Different start dates will result in different purchase prices and, sometimes, different stocks.
(For more on this see the October 12, 1998, Foolish Four Portfolio Report.) Individual stock returns shown here use as their starting price the closing price on the last trading day of the previous year, adjusted for splits, etc., as necessary. The ending value is the stock price as of the date above, plus dividends received.
