Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett's investing mentor, learned through trial and error and teaches a great lesson to long-term investors. In his book The Intelligent Investor, Graham advises:

"Have the courage of your knowledge and experience. If you have formed a conclusion from the facts, and if you know your judgment is sound, act on it -- even though others may hesitate or differ."

This simple quote has taught me to think for myself. Critical faculties and an independent, active mind are our greatest tools as investors. Even when our conclusions are wrong, if we've courageously acted on them and actively learned from them, our gradual success is inevitable.
