Most Appearances Update
by David Forrest (workshop@fool.com)
Between a Rock and a Hard Place (May 14, 1999) -- Happy Friday, Fools. Thanks to everyone who offered me feedback on last week's column, where I recapped some of the more interesting conversations on our Workshop message folder. I'll continue to do this from time to time and keep those of you with no time to read the boards in the loop.
Today's column is a quick update of the Most Appearances portfolio that we've played around with for the last few months. For you new readers of the column (or for those who want a refresher course), here are two links that walk you through the basic philosophy of the Most Appearances mock portfolio.
02/19/99, Most Appearances
02/26/99, Most Appearances - Part Deux
So far, Most Appearances is up 54.39% versus the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, up just 15.12%. The theoretical start of the portfolio was January of 1998, so please keep in mind that the returns, while impressive, only span a very short time in our investing lives. Also, for the newer folks, please remember that all of the model portfolios we have in the Workshop do not use real money. They don't take commissions into account, either.
Last year, we made no transaction in May because none of the stocks met the Most Appearances criteria. So there is no sale for the month of May. However, there was a purchase made. Schwab, Inc. (NYSE: SCH) appeared in 7 of the 10 screens we follow. Wow! Balancing the portfolio, we purchased $1765 worth of Schwab on May 7 of this month at a price of $103 13/16. This amounts to 17 shares of Schwab in the portfolio. Coming up for sale in June are Gap (NYSE: GPS) and Lexmark Intl. (NYSE: LXK).
For those keeping track at home, here is the list of the stocks in the Most Appearances model portfolio:
AEGEON N.V. (NYSE: AEG)
Biogen (Nasdaq: BGEN)
Dell Computer (Nasdaq: DELL)
EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC)
Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS)
Lexmark Intl. (NYSE: LXK)
Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL)
Paychex (Nasdaq: PAYX)
Recoton (Nasdaq: RCOT)
Symbol Tech. (Nasdaq: SBL)
Solectron (NYSE: SLR)
Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS)
Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW)
Uniphase Corp. (Nasdaq: UNPH)
Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT)
Quicksilver (NYSE: ZQK)
So far, the results have been impressive, and I really like the underlying logic for this model portfolio. If you have the time, click the links above and read the past columns on Most Appearances.
Have a great weekend!
