Week in Review
...Good gains from ANDW, CGO, CSCO
by Greg Markus (TMF Boring)
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Sept. 25, 1998) -- Stocks recovered from early weakness to close higher Friday. The Nasdaq gained a healthy 1.35%, while the S&P 500 rose a more modest 0.19%. The Boring Portfolio gained 0.46% with daily winners topping losers five to three.
Shares of Andrew Corp. (Nasdaq: ANDW) rose $15/16 to $14 1/8 as the big PCS Showcase trade show drew to a close in Orlando. Altogether, ANDW gained 12% this week, including a $1 pop on Wednesday after Nokia CEO Jorma Ollila said he had seen signs of "strong market development in 1998" and offered the prediction that the number of mobile telephone users worldwide would reach 1 billion by the year 2005.
For its part, Andrew offered an number of press releases this week giving examples of current projects in which the company has been involved. The company will release its fiscal fourth quarter results around the middle of next month. Based on guidance provided in the Q3 conference call, analysts are expecting Andrew to earn $0.31 per share, which would be off about 10% from the year-ago period but up sequentially from Q3's $0.28.
Although it eased $1/4 Friday to $27 9/16, shares of Atlas Air (NYSE: CGO) had a good week, ascending better than 15%. Rumors have been circulating that Atlas may benefit from the demise of competitor Southern Air Transport. Additional air freighters may also come onto the market, possibly for Atlas to acquire, due to the apparently permanent cessation of operations by Philippine Airlines.
Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) picked up $1 1/2 to $66 7/16. The Kid's stock enjoyed another strong week, gaining nearly 9%. I noticed that Cisco has just filed with the SEC its 10-K statement of financial results for the fiscal year ending this past July. If you have access to one of the commercial Websites that provide same-day access to SEC filings, you can download Cisco's 10-K now. Otherwise, you'll be able to obtain it free at the EDGAR site soon -- probably early next week. Meantime, there's a slew of useful information avilable for investors on Cisco's Website.
Finally tonight, Borders Group (NYSE: BGP) inched up $ 1/16 to $26 9/16. As you may recall, the company previously announced that the grand opening of Borders.com would occur "in September." (The e-commerce Website has been in "public preview" since May.) Well, there ain't a whole lot of September left, is there?
I happened upon a notice that the company would be hosting a gala open house in Ann Arbor on Sept. 29. I leave it to you to draw any inferences from that information that you will.
As for myself, the only thing that I intend drawing tonight is a beer or two to celebrate the end of an eventful week. I hope that you have a great weekend, and I'll see you back here Monday.
