Fool Portfolio Report

Alexandria, VA (June 12, 1997) -- The Fool Portfolio climbed 0.47%, on up moves from its Foolish Four stocks and a nice $1 climb from IOMEGA (NYSE: IOM). You can almost hear the scratching of heads in the investment community and the wondering aloud:

"Iomega?! Isn't that the company run by a bunch
of hucksters out in Utah? Isn't that the stock driven
by online chatter?"

The financial statements tell a different story

Iomega First Quarter 1997 1996 Sales $361 million $222 million Net Income $23 million $10 million Profit Margins 6.4% 4.5%

That makes for sales growth of 63% and earnings growth of 130%. As Iomega blasts out its reach, it is making more money through the push. Simple concept. It's precisely the sort of business model that a Fool cherishes -- higher volume at higher profit!

Now the media may choose to mock these companies. Though, in defense of the general financial press, it really was only a handful of freelance writers and television actors that took shots at this company. But we expect that you have the basic financial training to know that rapidly ascending sales in a do-si-do with climbing earnings, wrapped in an embrace with strong consumer demand, often leads to a wonderful investment.

It has for Iomega, which is up 733% for The Fool Portfolio since May, 1995.

A second Fool company worth mentioning today is Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (NYSE: MMM). 3M closed up $4 per share to $98 3/8. No news from the company. The stock has now risen 50% for us in ten months. In the day-to-day management of this site, we sometimes lose touch with what our Foolish Four companies are up to. Let's take a peek today at 3M:

Sales $14.5 billion
Earnings $1.6 billion
Profit Margins 11.0%

The Fool Portfolio closes today up 6.40% for 1997, with the Naz up 9.32% and the S&P 500 ahead a smashing 19.27%. Darn it. If you're getting tired of the brothers and their portfolio, you might want to check in on our Stocks for Dad selections for this year... and the accompanying press release.
