Whenever the words "natural gas transportation" are mentioned, the first reaction is to relate transportation to cars and trucks. That may not be the case anymore. This week, Westport Innovations (WPRT -0.17%) announced that it had signed a deal with Canadian National Railway (CNI 0.69%) to build LNG-powered locomotives. As intriguing as this story may sound, it isn't the first time natural gas has been considered for railroads. Burlington Northern Santa Fe has been testing the idea for the past couple months as well.

Transportation that doesn't involve cars may actually be a better fit for natural gas.
