There wasn't a speck of Kryptonite to block Superman from taking the all-time record for opening ticket sales in June.
The famous hero's latest film iteration, Man of Steel, newly released by Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Bros., raked in just over $113 million in the Friday-Sunday period, according to data compiled by Box Office Mojo, which said the tally trumped the previous record holder, Toy Story 3, crafted by Disney's (DIS 1.44%) Pixar, which amassed $110 million in its June 2010 debut.
The showing was also good enough for Man of Steel to take the second-best opening weekend so far this year, behind Iron Man 3, released by Disney unit Buena Vista, according to Box Office Mojo. Man of Steel had taken in another $12 million from Thursday night group sales.
Coming in at a distant second for this past weekend was another fresh release, the inexpensively budgeted apocalypse comedy This is the End. The Sony-(SONY 0.27%) distributed effort took in $20.5 million over the three-day period, said Box Office Mojo, which puts the film's production budget at $32 million..
Third place belonged to a thriller about a gang of magicians, Now You See Me. The movie, now in its third week of release, posted a weekend box office of $10.3 million, according to the Box Office Mojo tally. It is distributed by Lions Gate (LGF-A 4.41%).
