Spring has always been a popular time to list a home, and while the COVID-19 crisis could make showing a house more difficult, there are steps you can take to do so safely.
But safety measures aside, there are a few key items you'll want to check off your list before putting your home out there for potential buyers to see. Here are a few:
A cluttered home is an unappealing one. Not only is clutter unsightly but it can make your living space seem much smaller than it actually is. Before putting your home up for sale, take the time to go through each room and remove as many items as you can. You don't necessarily have to get rid of furniture, but if you have bins of clothing sitting out in your master bedroom or bins of toys in your kids' rooms, it's time to relegate those to the closet or garage so they're out of sight.
2. Boost your curb appeal
Your home's exterior is the first thing prospective buyers will notice when they come to see it. You can help make a good initial impression by trimming your grass, cleaning up your bushes and shrubs, and, if possible, planting some flowers (though you may need to wait until the weather warms a bit more to do that, depending on where you live). Along these lines, it's also a good idea to repaint a chipped fence or replace a rusting porch swing.
3. Pressure-wash your siding
A dirty exterior can make an otherwise nice home seem overwhelmingly unappealing. Vinyl siding tends to take a beating during the winter, but if you rent a pressure washer from a local hardware store, it shouldn't take more than a few hours to wash off grime and muck. If you have a deck, you may want to do the same there.
Painting is a very easy, inexpensive endeavor, so if there are areas in your home with chipped walls or trim, spend a little time making them look nicer. You might also consider toning down walls that are brighter -- neutral colors tend to appeal to a wider range of buyers.
5. Clean your windows
Dirty windows can make an otherwise sparkling home seem uninviting. Spend some time cleaning your windows before listing your home, especially since it's a good idea to lift shades and blinds to let in natural light while prospective buyers are looking around. And speaking of blinds and shades, make sure yours aren't dusty. It's easy to neglect to clean them, but doing so takes very little time and could make a big difference.
