Best Credit Cards for International Travel: Turn Everyday Spending Into Global Adventures

Review Updated
Brooklyn Sprunger
Many or all of the products here are from our partners that compensate us. It’s how we make money. But our editorial integrity ensures that our product ratings are not influenced by compensation. Citi is an advertising partner of Motley Fool Money.

I love traveling abroad. Germany, Spain, Peru, Thailand… as my wishlist gets longer, so does the impending financial burden of these trips. But here's the good news: I've been to seven countries so far, and I've paid for almost all of my flights or hotel stays with travel rewards points. It just takes the right card.

The best cards for international travel have no foreign transaction fees and earn you points and rewards that get you free flights and stays. Luxury perks like airport lounges can make your trip a lot more comfortable, and including nice-to-haves like trip insurance can give you peace of mind. Below are my favorite cards for traveling abroad and why I like each one, so you can find the best fit for your next adventure.

  • Our team of experts reviewed over 260 credit cards
  • We evaluate all credit cards across the same 4 key criteria: value, welcome experience, fees, and perks
  • Our credit card ratings are never influenced by our advertising partners
  • If we wouldn't recommend an offer to a close family member, we won't recommend it to you

Our aim is to maintain a balanced best-of list featuring top-scoring credit cards from reputable brands. 'Best for' category selections on this page are determined by our editors, and a single card may be recognized in multiple categories.

Our top international travel picks

Great for simple, flat-rate travel rewards: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees)

  • Earn 2X miles on every purchase, plus 5X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. You'll earn rewards on everything you buy, and redeeming those rewards for travel is just as easy.

Great for luxury perks and premium travel benefits: The Platinum Card® from American Express (see rates and fees)

  • Get VIP treatment with access to 1,400+ airport lounges, hotel elite status, and up to $500 in annual travel, retail, and entertainment credits. A strong pick if you want a more elevated travel experience. Terms apply; enrollment may be required.

You'll earn 2X miles on every purchase (plus 5X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel), which means you're racking up rewards whether you're booking flights or just grabbing coffee at the airport. It's easy to use and just as easy to redeem.

That said, there's a $95 annual fee and no bonus categories beyond travel through the Capital One portal, so if you're a points-maximizer, you might want more. But for straightforward value and global acceptance, it's a steady pick.

This is the card I have, and it's gotten me several free trips, so I'm definitely a fan. This is a great card if you spend across the board -- groceries, restaurants, streaming. My favorite perk is that the points you earn are worth more in Chase Travel℠, so you're really getting a travel upgrade on your normal spending. Plus, Chase has a wide variety of transfer partners to choose from, where you get a 1:1 transfer ratio. This is where the magic really happens -- your points go a lot further as United Miles, Southwest Points, etc.

If you want luxury extras like lounge access, you'll need to look elsewhere. But with a $95 annual fee, flexible points, and a user-friendly portal, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) is one of the most well-rounded travel cards out there.

If international travel is your personality, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees) will match your energy. It offers all the good parts of the Chase Sapphire Preferred, but with bonuses like Global Entry or TSA PreCheck and lounge access in over 1,300 airports. And even better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred, your points are worth up to 2x with Points Boost when you book through Chase Travel.

The $795 annual fee is steep, but the $300 travel credit takes a big bite out of it. It's a luxury card, yes -- but it delivers real value for frequent flyers who want premium perks without jumping into ultra-exclusive territory.

    • No expiration and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with this card
    • No Foreign Transaction Fees on purchases

The Citi Strata Premier® Card (see rates and fees) is ideal for folks whose biggest spending categories are groceries and gas. Unlike most travel cards, one of the highest earning categories for this card is supermarket and gas station spending, so you can earn travel rewards just for your normal spending. Plus, you'll get an annual $100 hotel credit if you book a stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) through Citi.

It's worth noting that Citi's transfer partner list isn't as extensive as issuers like Chase or Amex, so your points may not go as far with big airlines. If your spending is primarily groceries, this is probably not a deal-breaker, but if that's not a massive spending category for you, there are other options that will get you travel rewards AND transfer partners.

You'll get free first checked bags (for you and a companion), priority boarding, and credits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. It also includes underrated travel protections like trip delay and lost luggage insurance that come in clutch when plans go sideways.

How to choose the right international travel card for you

Picking the best travel card really comes down to your habits and goals. Here's what to think about before you apply:

How often do you travel internationally?

If you're flying abroad more than once a year, it's probably worth getting a premium card with perks like lounge access and travel credits. If you're an occasional traveler, a lower-fee card with solid rewards might make more sense.

What do you spend the most on?

Some cards offer extra points for groceries, gas, dining, or travel booked through their portals. If most of your spending is on everyday expenses, go for a card that rewards that. If you want to earn miles on everything, flat-rate cards like the Capital One Venture Card are great.

Are you maximizing rewards or keeping it simple?

If you're someone who loves optimizing every point and booking business class flights with transfer partners, choose a card with flexible, valuable points (like Amex or Chase). If you just want to rack up rewards without thinking about it, a straightforward card that earns across the board might be a better fit.

Does the card have no foreign transaction fees?

This is a must. Any good international travel card should let you spend freely abroad without tacking on a 3% fee every time you swipe.

Should you get a general travel card or an airline card?

It depends on how loyal you are to one airline. Airline cards are great if you always fly the same airline -- you'll get perks like free checked bags, priority boarding, and airport lounge access with that airline.

But if you like to shop around for the cheapest or most convenient flights, a general travel card gives you more flexibility. You can book with any airline or transfer your points where they'll go furthest. In short: brand loyal? Go airline. Want options? Go general.

FAQs

  • Look for cards with no foreign transaction fees, global acceptance, travel protections, and rewards or points you can use for flights or hotels.

  • Maybe not. Lounge access is great, but it often comes with high annual fees. If you only travel occasionally, a mid-tier card with solid rewards may give you better value.

  • It depends. Airline cards offer great perks if you're loyal to one airline. But general travel cards give you more flexibility with points and how you book travel.

  • It's not essential, but it can come in handy. Many travel cards offer trip cancellation, baggage delay, or rental car insurance -- a nice safety net for unexpected issues.
