The 10 American Cities With the Most Retirees

Where the seniors are

If you'd like to live out your retirement in a location with lots of other senior citizens, there are a bunch of upsides you'll likely enjoy. For starters, you may find many more potential new friends there -- ones who aren't busy working and raising a family. There may also be ample healthcare facilities in the area -- ideally high-quality ones. That's important, as older citizens often need more attention from clinical providers. There are also likely to be lots of activities to enjoy, such as golf, concerts, or games. Senior neighborhoods tend to be quiet as well.

Here are the 10 cities with the highest proportion of people aged 60 and older, according to a 2018 report from the U.S. Census Bureau. As you might have guessed, most are in Florida -- but a few are not.

Think hard before moving

Do a lot of research before moving to a new place for your retirement, because while many great retirement destinations have many appealing factors, there are likely some downsides worth considering as well. Some, for example, might sport high taxes, or they may be fairly far from any major airport, making it hard to get away. If you'll be living far from your friends and relatives, consider whether you might feel isolated or lonely or simply in need of assistance as you grow older. It can be smart to live in an area of interest for at least a few weeks or months before deciding to move there.
