Full Amex EveryDay Card review

This credit card is a good fit for: Consumers looking for a no annual fee card that earns valuable American Express points. Those who make lots of purchases will also score bonus points with this card.

Top perks

Here are more details on the benefits of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express.

0%, 15 months intro APR

This card has a 0%, 15 months intro APR on purchases and balance transfers. After the intro period, the go-to 18.24% to 29.24%, variable rate applies. If you need to pay off any big purchases over time, or refinance credit card debt, a 0% intro APR comes in handy. While 15 months isn't the longest 0% intro APR period, it's up there with what other rewards cards offer. (See rates and fees, terms apply.)

Up to 2 points per $1

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express earns 2 points per $1 at U.S. supermarkets, up to a maximum of $6,000 per calendar year. On all other spending, it earns 1 point per $1. Terms apply.

10,000 Membership Rewards® points

As a new Card Member, you can earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after you use your new Card to make $2,000 in purchases in your first 6 months. It's not anywhere near the biggest welcome offers, but it's a decent offer for a no annual fee card. Terms apply.

Flexible rewards points

One thing we love about American Express cards that earn Membership Rewards points are the redemptions that the rewards program offers. American Express has quite a few travel partners, including many popular airlines and hotels, where you can transfer your points. With a little know-how, you could get $0.02 per point or more by transferring your points.

You can also use points as cash through American Express Travel. The best option is to do this with airfare, where you'll get $0.01 per point. Terms apply.

20% extra points

If you make at least 20 purchases in a billing period, you'll receive a 20% points bonus on those transactions. For bonus category purchases, that would bump your rewards rate up to 2.4 points per $1. Purchases at the standard rewards rate would earn you 1.2 points per $1. Terms apply.

No annual fee

You don't need to take on any new out-of-pocket costs with this card. That's especially helpful if you're getting it to save money with its 0% intro APR. (See rates and fees.)

Car rental loss and damage insurance

You'll have this complimentary insurance on eligible rentals that you pay for using Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express. Note that you do need to decline the collision damage waiver for your card's insurance to apply. Terms apply*.

Purchase protection

Eligible purchases made with this card are covered against damage or theft for the first 90 days. The coverage maximum is up to $1,000 per eligible purchase and up to $50,000 per calendar year. Terms apply.

Alternatives to consider

  • If you want an easy-to-use cash back card: The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card keeps it simple with an unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases. In addition to the excellent cash back rate, this card also has a big welcome offer.
  • If you want more bonus categories: The American Express® Gold Card is also in the Membership Rewards program and earns 4x points at restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year). Terms apply. There is an annual fee for this card, but it's well worth it for big spenders. (See rates and fees.)

What could be improved

There are a few areas where American Express could make this card better.

Limited bonus categories

The rewards rate on this card is disappointing. Even if you only look at no annual fee cards, there are plenty of options available that have more bonus categories and earn more. You may want to compare credit cards to see if another rewards card would better fit your spending habits.

Incentivizes spending money

The 20% points bonus you'll get for making at least 20 purchases per month is nice, but it can also motivate you to buy things you don't really need. Terms apply. Make sure you avoid the temptation to overspend if you get this card.

Foreign transaction fee

It could get costly to use the card outside the country, as it charges a 2.7% foreign transaction fee. For international travel, you're better off checking out travel credit cards that won't charge you this fee. (See rates and fees.)

Suggested credit score

To apply for Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express, you should have good credit, meaning a FICO® Score of 670 or higher. American Express will look at several factors in addition to your credit score, but your credit is a key part of whether your application is approved or denied.

The Amex EveryDay Card is right for you if:

You want an American Express rewards card that doesn't charge an annual fee. It's also worth considering if you're interested in paying off purchases over time or consolidating your credit card debt with this card's 0% intro APR. (See rates and fees).

While the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express has some solid benefits, it doesn't stand out in any particular area. There are top credit cards with higher rewards rates and longer 0% intro APR offers. It's not bad for getting started with the American Express Membership Rewards program, but for most consumers, there are better options out there.
