5 Credit Cards That Are Perfect for Halloween Shopping
by Brittney Myers | Oct. 23, 2020
From candy and costumes to creepy decor, you can earn credit card rewards on all your Halloween supplies.
It's unlikely many of us will have a typical Halloween this year, but that doesn't mean we have to miss out on the costumes, candy, and spooky fun entirely. From socially-distant trick-or-treating to virtual costume parties, people are determined to keep the Halloween spirit alive.
Even a slimmed-down Halloween can mean spending a scary amount. But at least if you choose the right rewards credit card, it can help make Halloween a little less frightening. Whether you're after some tasty treats or spooky threads, these cash back cards can help you earn big bonus rewards.
1. Chase Freedom Flex℠
The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex℠ is the new kid on the block, and an ideal pick for nearly all of your Halloween essentials. To start, new cardholders can enjoy 5% cash back on up to $12,000 in grocery store purchases during the first year -- that's one heck of a candy haul.
You can also get some killer cash back on your costumes and decor, thanks to this quarter's bonus category: Walmart and PayPal. Through the end of 2020, you'll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases made with your card at Walmart stores or through PayPal. Don't forget to activate your quarterly bonus category to earn your rewards.
2. Discover it® Cash Back
Another rotating-category card, the Discover it® Cash Back is a great pick for Halloween lovers who prefer to shop online. Cardholders who activate their bonus category can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases from Walmart.com, Target.com, and Amazon.com from now through December. (And yes, that includes the Walmart and Target mobile apps.)
What's more, new cardholders can earn twice the rewards with Discover's unique matching program. It automatically doubles the cash back you earn in the first year. That means every creepy crawly and plastic pumpkin could effectively earn 10% cash back -- not bad for a no-annual-fee credit card.
3. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card
The best way to stay out of the stores this Halloween is to shop online, and few digital domains can compete with the variety you'll find on Amazon. If you already have an Amazon Prime account, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card may be the best way to save. It offers 5% cash back on Amazon.com purchases, with no limit on how much you can earn.
Of course, even Amazon has its limits. If you're looking for a fresh pumpkin to carve, you may be out of luck -- unless, of course, you shop at Whole Foods. If you do your grocery shopping at the Amazon-owned chain, you'll get even more value out of this credit card, which offers 5% cash back on Whole Foods purchases.
4. Target RedCard
Do your Halloween preparations start with a Target run? Consider the Target RedCard. Even though it's a store credit card, regular Target shoppers might get value out of the RedCard. It provides a 5% discount on purchases right at checkout. This applies to in-store, online, and mobile app purchases.
Online shoppers could also save a little more thanks to free shipping or free two-day shipping on eligible items. There may be a minimum purchase to unlock free shipping, and orders delivered through Shipt may have a delivery fee.
5. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
If you're spending this Halloween safely at home with some scary movies, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express has you covered. You can earn 6% cash back on up to $6,000 in grocery store purchases each year, making it easy to load up on snacks for your monster movie marathon.
You'll also earn big on your eerie entertainment, as the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earns 6% cash back on select streaming services. The list of eligible services is long and includes popular picks like CBS All Access, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Sling TV. This is the only card on our list that charges an annual fee, but the benefits should more than cover the $95 price tag.
Take some of the scare out of Halloween shopping
No one wants their shopping bill to be the most frightening thing about Halloween. With the right rewards credit card, at least you can get a little cash back for a rainy day -- or your holiday spending (talk about scary!).
Our credit card expert uses the card we reveal below, and it could earn you $1,148 (seriously)
As long as you pay them off each month, credit cards are a no-brainer for savvy Americans. They protect against fraud far better than debit cards, help raise your credit score, and can put hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars in rewards back in your pocket each year.
But with so many cards out there, you need to choose wisely. This top-rated card offers the ability to pay 0% interest on purchases until late 2021, has some of the most generous cash back rewards we’ve ever seen (up to 5%!), and somehow still sports a $0 annual fee.
