Capital One® Quicksilver® Card vs. Capital One® QuicksilverOne®: Which Should You Pick?

Lyle is a writer specializing in credit cards, travel rewards programs, and banking. His work has also appeared on MSN Money, USA Today, and Yahoo! Finance.

If you prefer cash-back credit cards that earn a flat rate on everything and don’t make you keep track of any bonus categories, the Capital One® Quicksilver® cards fit that description. But one thing that Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t mention on all those commercials is that there are two types of cards in this line.

In one corner, you have the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card. In the other, there’s the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card. You don’t need to flip a coin to decide which one gets your application, because I’m matching them up in six areas. Since the first three areas are the most important, they each count for two points, and the final three count for one point each.

Annual fees

  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- No annual fee
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- $39

Annual fees are uncommon with cash-back cards, but they still crop up from time to time. Case in point, the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card. Even though $39 isn’t some huge amount, especially when many travel rewards credit cards carry annual fees of $95 or more, it’s still a big disadvantage against other cash-back cards that you could get for free. And Capital One doesn’t waive that annual fee for the first year.

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card takes this category by having no annual fee.

Why you can trust me

I love earning the highest-possible return on the money I spend, so I’ve devoted a lot of time towards researching credit cards and calculating which ones provide the greatest value. Since I’ve looked over the details for just about every credit card you could think of, I know how they all stack up compared to each other. Through careful selection of the best credit cards and paying certain expenses with the right cards, I’ve earned thousands of dollars in rewards over multiple rewards programs. My credit card benefits usually save me $100 or more every time I go on a trip.

Sign-up bonuses

  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- $150 after spending $500 in the first three months
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- No sign-up bonus

The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card has a respectable sign-up bonus of $150, which is higher than most (but not all) cash-back cards. Its spending minimum is only $500 in three months so it’s doubtful anyone would have a problem reaching it.

You won’t get any sort of sign-up bonus with the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card, and that’s disappointing. When you’re paying an annual fee to have a credit card, it’s nice to earn a bonus upfront to balance that out.

Cash-back rates

  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- Unlimited 1.5% cash back
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- Unlimited 1.5% cash back

There’s no difference between these cards in terms of the cash back they offer, as you’ll have an unlimited flat rate of 1.5% either way.

How much you earn with each card

While there’s plenty of factors to look at when you compare credit cards, the most significant is what you’ll earn with each one.

It’s obvious that the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card will earn you a higher amount per year since it doesn’t have an annual fee. But to give you an idea of what the difference is, I’ve put together the table below. It demonstrates the amount of cash back you’ll earn by spending $20,000 per year, a reasonable amount for the average consumer, and what kind of value you’ll get after taking annual fees and sign-up bonuses into account.

Card Annual Fee Cash-back on $20,000 in Annual Spending Signup Bonus Annual Value
Capital One® Quicksilver® Card $0 $300 $150 $450 first year, $300 every year thereafter
Capital One® QuicksilverOne® $39 $300 $0 $261
  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- Excellent
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- Average

One of the things I appreciate about the Capital One site is that with every credit card it includes a recommended credit level for applicants. You can also pull up a description of each credit level to see where you fit in based on your financial history. Having this information right there helps you determine which cards you can get and which cards may be out of your league.

Since the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card has quite a few perks, you’ll typically need excellent credit to get it. Although the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® is lacking in terms of benefits, it only requires average credit for approval, so it’s available to far more consumers.

Intro APR offers

  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- No intro APR offer

With the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card, the intro APR offer is the main selling point, even though it also has an excellent sign-up bonus and a good cash-back rate without an annual fee. But no interest for 15 months is a lifesaver when you want to make a big purchase or get credit card debt under control.

The Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card loses another category decisively here. Since it has no intro APR offer, you wouldn’t want to use it in either of the situations mentioned above.

Price and purchase protections

Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card:

Damage and theft protection: 90 days; maximum benefit per item of $500; maximum benefit per account of $50,000

Extended warranty coverage: Eligible warranties of three years or less are automatically extended by up to 12 months

Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card:

Price protection: 60 days; maximum benefit per item of $250; up to four claims per 12-month period

Extended warranty coverage: Eligible warranties of 12 months or less are automatically doubled

Although these are both Capital One credit cards, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card is a Visa Signature® card, while the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card is a Platinum Mastercard®. Because of that, the cards offer different price and purchase protections.

Very few people select their credit card based on the protections it offers, so these details are more of a nice little bonus than a critical factor in the decision-making process. The main difference is that the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card protects your purchases from damage or theft, and the Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card covers you on pricing changes.

Personally, I rank damage and theft coverage a bit higher than price protection. The Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card also has the superior extended warranty coverage, which is enough to earn the win.

The final score

  • Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- 8 points
  • Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card -- 3 points

This matchup is a blowout in favor of the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card. Although these cards have the same cash-back rates, that’s the only important area where they’re evenly matched. When it comes to annual fees, sign-up bonuses, and intro 0% APR offers, it’s not even close.

You should consider applying for the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card in these situations:

  • You want a no-annual-fee cash-back card that earns an unlimited flat rate.
  • You’re planning to buy something expensive that you plan to pay off over up to 15 months.Capital One® QuicksilverOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card.
  • You have credit card debt that you want to consolidate.

Our Bottom Line

This may be the most versatile and flexible cash-back card on the market. The recent addition of a longer 0% intro APR makes the offer hard to pass up, especially if you're wanting to keep a one-card wallet.
