With all the great travel cards on the market, you probably want to know how you can choose the best travel rewards credit card for your needs. These cards offer lots of features, but as you'd expect, cards with more perks also tend to cost more.

To start, here are the must-haves you should look for in any travel card you're considering:

  • An annual fee that works for you: Most travel cards charge annual fees, but you can find no-annual-fee travel cards, as well.
  • A high rewards rate: A good travel card will have either a competitive rate on every purchase or a bonus rate on certain types of purchases.
  • Useful rewards: You should be able to easily redeem your points for the type of travel you use often, whether that's airfare, hotel stays, vacation rentals, or all of the above.

That's just the start, though. You can find cards that offer all kinds of high-value perks, such as huge sign-up bonuses, spending credits at luxury hotels, and airport lounge access. It's all a matter of deciding which benefits will save you money or improve your travels.

COVID-19 considerations for credit cards:

With the current state of the world, there can be a lot of uncertainty surrounding your personal finances. There are many kinds of travel credit cards and rewards programs available. While it's great to have options, it can also make things a bit complicated. You might find yourself confused about how these different travel cards work or what features you need. The world of travel rewards isn't as tricky as it seems, though. Once you've checked out this crash course, you'll have all the info you need to start earning points and redeeming them for free or discounted travel.

What is a travel rewards credit card?

A travel rewards credit card is a type of credit card that earns rewards you can use for travel. These rewards are called either points or miles, depending on the card.

While there are many travel cards out there, they all fall into one of two groups:

  • General travel rewards cards: These are travel cards that aren't tied to a specific travel provider, giving you more flexibility with how you use your rewards. You'll be able to redeem points towards multiple types of travel purchases. Many of these cards also offer transferable points that you can send to airline and/or hotel loyalty programs.
  • Co-branded travel rewards cards: These are travel cards that are tied to the loyalty program of one travel provider, most often an airline or hotel. They're called co-branded cards because there are two companies connected to the card: the credit card company and the travel provider. You can only redeem your rewards through the travel provider's loyalty program.

How do travel credit cards work?

Travel rewards credit cards earn points when you spend money, and you can then redeem those points for travel. There are two ways you'll earn points:

  1. Get points for everyday spending: Each time you buy something using your credit card, you'll earn a certain number of points. Some travel cards earn a flat rate regardless of what the spending category is. Others earn different amounts based on the spending category of the purchase, such as travel and dining.
  2. Receive big sign-up bonuses: Most popular travel cards include a sign-up bonus that you get if you meet a spending minimum. Sign-up bonuses are a popular incentive that banks use to get new customers, and they're the fastest way you can earn points.

Top features of the best travel rewards credit cards

There are hundreds of features across all the travel cards that are available. Here are some that you'll often find among the best travel credit cards.

Big sign-up bonus

Sign-up bonuses are often the quickest way to earn points. The typical bonus consists of an amount, a spending requirement, and a timeframe, such as "earn 50,000 points for spending $3,000 on purchases within three months."

Although it's the bonus amount that catches the eye, you also need to verify that you can hit the spending minimum without buying things you don't need.

High rewards rate

A travel card's rewards rate is the number of points it earns on your spending. A high rewards rate is a must, because it means you can maximize your credit card rewards and get more free travel. The best travel rewards credit cards will offer either of the following:

  • Extra points in one or more bonus categories, such as 3 points per $1 on travel and dining
  • An impressive flat rate that you earn on every purchase, such as 1.5 points on every $1 you spend

Spending credits

You can put spending credits automatically towards specific types of purchases. Each credit will have a monetary limit over a set timeframe. Here are a few examples:

These types of credits are becoming increasingly popular. The cards that offer them almost always have annual fees, but spending credits can at least balance out the cost of the card.

Airport lounge access

Most high-end travel cards offer some type of airport lounge access. If you'll be spending a lot of time at major airports, this perk can get you free food and drinks in a more comfortable environment than the general boarding area.

How to compare travel rewards credit cards

When you compare credit cards, it can be hard to know what's important and what isn't. To help out with that, here are the items to look for when deciding between multiple travel cards:

What to Look For Why It Matters
Rewards rate A card that earns more points can help you get more free travel.
Annual fee If multiple credit cards offer the features you need, it makes sense to choose the one that costs less.
Redemption options To get the most out of your travel rewards, you'll need to be able to use them for the travel you want.
Sign-up bonus These bonuses can be worth hundreds of dollars or more.
Travel perks If a card has travel perks you'll use regularly, such as airport lounge access or free checked luggage, that can make it much more valuable.

Is a travel rewards card right for me?

A travel rewards card is right for you if you take at least two or three trips every year and have good credit.

Since these cards usually have travel perks, they become more valuable the more you travel. If you're someone who travels regularly, for business or pleasure, then a travel card could help you save money and enjoy your trips much more. You'll also have plenty of chances to redeem your card's rewards. Those who don't travel much are better off with cash-back credit cards.

The best travel credit cards are typically only available to consumers with a good credit score. That means a FICO® Score of 670 and above. If you have a lower score, then you should work on building your credit before you apply for a travel card.

FAQs

  • A travel credit card earns rewards that are redeemable for travel purchases. You'll earn travel rewards every time you make a purchase with the card. You may also earn points through bonus offers, such as sign-up bonuses.

Redemption options will depend on what card you have. Travel cards may let you redeem rewards in any of the following ways:

    • Purchasing award travel, such as booking airfare or hotel stays in points
    • Statement credits towards previous travel purchases
    • Purchasing travel through the card issuer's travel portal
    • Transferring points to the card issuer's travel partners
  • Travel rewards credit cards are better for people who either travel regularly or want to be able to travel more or save money on travel by redeeming rewards for flights, hotels, cruises, activities, and more.

Cash back credit cards are better for people who aren't interested in traveling or prefer to earn rewards they can spend on a wide range of purchases.

In general, the best travel credit cards tend to offer slightly more valuable rewards than the best cash back credit cards, but travel rewards are more limited when it comes to redemption. Travel rewards can also be harder to earn for some people, as travel rewards credit cards usually offer bonuses on travel spending and sometimes dining.

If you don't spend in those categories, a cash back credit card might be the best option, as those can offer bonuses on a wider variety of spending categories, including gas, supermarkets, and office supplies.

  • Travel rewards cards are worth the annual fee for consumers who use their cards often and take full advantage of the benefits those cards offer.

As a general rule, the more that you spend using a travel card, the more valuable it will be. If a card has a $95 annual fee, but you earn 50,000 points per year from it that you redeem for $500 in travel, then you're getting $405 in annual value from the card. That value will be even greater if the card has extra travel perks, such as spending credits, that you're able to use.

You can determine whether a travel credit card will be worth the annual fee by asking yourself the following:

    • How much do you expect to spend per year using the card, and how many travel points will you earn?
    • What other benefits does the card offer, and how much do you value them?

By comparing your answers with the card's annual fee, you'll be able to decide if you should apply.
