This auto insurer is a good fit for: Drivers with a recent accident history.

Please note: MetLife no longer offers home and auto insurance. The Farmers Insurance Group is now responsible for MetLife Auto & Home's policies. Current policyholders will need to work with Farmers moving forward. The information in this review is relevant only to former MetLife policies.

Top perks

Affordable premiums for drivers with imperfect records

MetLife was less expensive than some competitors for drivers who had a recent at-fault accident on their record. While all insurers charge more for motorists with accidents, MetLife's surcharge was smaller than the one imposed by Geico and several other big name insurers. Those looking for the best cheap auto insurance with an imperfect driving record should consider MetLife.

Discounts for good driving

MetLife offers motorists the opportunity to reduce premiums if they use the My Journey program to track their driving habits. This can provide considerable savings, making MetLife's premiums more affordable.

After-market add-ons are covered

MetLife's custom equipment coverage will pay to repair or replace after-market add-ons on a vehicle (like an upgraded stereo system) when the driver suffers a loss. The custom equipment coverage includes navigation systems, custom spoilers, custom paint jobs, wheels and grills, and more. Policyholders can choose how much after-market coverage they need, but $2,000 worth of coverage added nothing to the policy's premium costs.

What could be improved

A better overall rating

MetLife received just a B- rating from the Better Business Bureau and it is not BBB accredited, as some of the best car insurance companies are. It also failed to earn top marks in overall customer satisfaction from J.D. Power & Associates, coming in behind NJM Insurance, Amica Mutual, Auto-Owners Insurance, and The Hartford.

Alternatives to consider

When looking for an auto insurer who offers top-notch customer service: Amica Mutual was ranked well above MetLife. However, keep in mind that Amica may be more expensive than MetLife for some drivers, especially those with an accident history.

Monthly premium costs

MetLife did not provide quotes in our representative market. Using an alternative but similar location, these were the insurance premiums the company offered to motorists fitting our driving profiles.

Discounts available

MetLife doesn't offer as many discounts as some competitors, but does provide savings in certain situations. Discounts are available for:

  • Good drivers
  • Automated payments
  • Bundled coverage
  • Involvement with certain organizations or associations

Coverage options

Policy types

  • Auto
  • RV

MetLife offers fewer policy types via its website than other insurers, with only auto and RV coverage listed under the company's online products.

Coverage types

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist
  • Collision
  • Comprehensive
  • Custom equipment coverage
  • Roadside assistance
  • Rental car reimbursement

MetLife's custom equipment coverage comes standard with policies and provides up to $2,000 in protection for after-market add-ons such as custom paint jobs or stereos. Motorists also have the option to add additional coverage for these customizations for a small additional fee.

Customer service and ratings

MetLife failed to earn top marks from J.D. Power & Associates on overall customer satisfaction, or on its website. It also received just a B- rating from the Better Business Bureau. Getting quotes was much more cumbersome online, especially compared with competitors such as AAA that offer a much better website user experience and faster online quotes.

This auto insurer is best for:

MetLife is best suited for:

  • Drivers with an imperfect driving history who want to pay the most affordable premiums
  • Motorists who are part of an organization that entitles them to MetLife discounts
  • Drivers with custom add-ons to their vehicles that they want covered

But drivers may want to consider AAA insurance if they want an easier, faster online quote process or Amica Mutual if top-notch customer service matters most.
