The median home value in Springfield is $152,400, according to Niche, which is a steal compared to the median Massachusetts home value of $433,883 (according to Zillow). Meanwhile, the average property tax rate in Hampden County, where Springfield is located, is 1.36% of a home's assessed value. That's a bit higher than the average property tax rate in Massachusetts, which Tax-rates.org reports as 1.04%.
Located an hour west of Boston, Worcester is an emerging hub for startup tech companies. The city also has a nice array of parks and restaurants that make it appealing to young professionals. The median home value in Worcester is $220,700, while the average property tax rate in Worcester County is 1.1% of a home's assessed value.
Home to renowned universities like Harvard and MIT, Cambridge's economy largely revolves around academia and education. And since it's very much a college town, it's loaded with restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. The median home value in Cambridge is $719,300, clearly quite high compared to the median home value statewide. But property taxes in Middlesex County, where Cambridge is located, are right in line with the state's average -- 1.04%.
One of the East Coast's busiest cities, Boston is loaded with restaurants, bars, shops, and job opportunities, which explains why young professionals flock there. That's lower than the average property tax rate statewide.
