Walmart employs 2.3 million people worldwide, the most for any company. The retailer also is the largest company in terms of revenue, bringing in more than $570 billion per year. Amazon follows at a close second, employing close to 1.3 million people worldwide and generating $470 billion in revenue per year. Combined, Walmart and Amazon employ more people than the population of countries like Uruguay, Mongolia, and Albania.

These large companies have locations across the U.S. To determine the largest employer in every state, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed Dun & Bradstreet's 2021 Business Rankings. Walmart is the largest employer in 22 states, but it is headquartered in Arkansas. Businesses with headquarters in a given state were ranked based on the number of employees in that state. The biggest employer headquartered in one state is Albertsons, with 270,000 employees in Idaho. The smallest is AES Marine Support Services LLC in Alaska with 1,812 employees. The largest employers in 12 states are in the medical, science, or research industry. These organizations require a large staff of medical care providers to provide round-the-clock care. Not surprisingly, the biggest employers in states that depend on tourism, like Hawaii and Nevada, are related to the industry.
