Rule Maker Stocking Stuffers

By Rob Landley ([email protected])

Austin, TX (Dec. 24, 1998) -- Today's column is a short one, since the markets were only open half a day. More importantly, it's Christmas Eve and I don't wanna work and you can't make me, so there. Nyeah.

First, here's a vitally important set of semi-recent Doonesbury strips:

I've been meaning to put them into a column all week, and if I arrange them like I just did they take up a whole six lines!

If you're looking for last minute gifts, may I point out that the brothers Gardner have now published four separate books that are probably all at a bookstore near you. There's The Motley Fool Investment Guide, The Motley Fool Investment Workbook, You Have More Than You Think, and the new Rule Makers, Rule Breakers. (If you're wondering why we recently changed the names of the portfolios, I'd say it's a marketing ploy tied in with the new book. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.)

Another fun stocking stuffer would be the first share of a stock with an excellent user-friendly Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRIP), like Coke, Intel or Pfizer. Perfect for all those nieces and nephews. At this point you couldn't get the stock certificate in time to stick it in a card, but it's the thought that counts.

If you have your own DRIP, you can generally send them a signed and notarized letter (your bank can probably notarize it for you) asking them to transfer X number of shares from your account to someone else. You'll need to include the recipient's full name, address, and social security number. If you want them to mail out the shares on a stock certificate, say so on the letter.

If you don't own any of the specific stock you'd like to give, you need to go buy some from a broker. I've had good luck with Dean Whitter, which caps its commissions at 10% of the purchase price of your stock, so isn't too bad a place to get your first DRIP share despite being a full-service broker.

For more about DRIP investing, go read about the Drip portfolio right here at The Fool. Personally, I'm off to start my Christmas shopping. (Yes, in a mall, on Christmas Eve. I wonder if I have any riot gear in the closet?)
