These aren't the best of times for booksellers. Sites like Craigslist and eBay's (NASDAQ:EBAY) Half.com are giving used books new lives as trade bait.

Cry for your local hardcover retailer, but save a few special tears for Borders (NYSE:BGP). It can't bank on the thrifty the way closeout haven Books-a-Million (NASDAQ:BAMM) does. It never had the strong sister concept, the way Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) was able to spin off GameStop (NYSE:GME).

Borders is betting it all -- well, nearly all -- on its namesake superstore concept, and that kind of wager is always good fodder for a Duel. I'm the bull this week. David Meier is the bear.
