Warren Buffett's partner, Charlie Munger, once said, "I think I've been in the top 5% of my age cohort all my life in understanding the power of incentives, and all my life I've underestimated it. And never a year passes but I get some surprise that pushes my limit a little farther."

When corporate boards use bad incentives for management's pay, disaster often ensues. (Think Lehman Brothers.) Incentives based on singular metrics such as revenue growth, EBITDA, ROE, or earnings per share are easily manipulated and gamed. Fortunately, there is a better way: EVA momentum.

Creator Bennett Stewart of EVA Dimensions, who also co-created EVA (economic value added), calls EVA momentum "the only percent metric where more is always better than less. It always increases when managers do things that make economic sense."

So what does this mean for investors? A positive EVA momentum reading means a company has created more value by increasing its EVA while a negative EVA momentum reading means EVA has decreased, signaling less value creation. EVA momentum is one of the few, if not the only, performance measures with such a clear dividing line between good and bad performance.

The best companies, then, create value in excess of their cost of capital, as reflected by positive EVA momentum. The higher the EVA momentum, the faster management is creating value.

Let's look at the resorts and gaming industry and see the most effective producers of value as measured by EVA momentum over the past quarter, year, and three-year period. The companies are ranked by percentile versus the Russell 3000. The limitations I've set are that the company must have more than a $500 million market cap and be traded on a major U.S. exchange.

Las Vegas Sands leads the industry with a 5.5% EVA momentum in the past year, as well as a three-year trend of 2%, producing an overall score that beats over 93% of the Russell 3000.

Businesses with high EVA momentum are effectively creating value. It will be interesting to see how useful this extremely new metric proves for companies and investors. If it lives up to its promise, EVA momentum will be an essential tool in investors' arsenals.

Another tool for better investing
Most investors don't keep tabs on their companies' fundamental value. That's a mistake. If you take the time to read past the headlines and crack a filing now and then, you're in a much better position to spot potential trouble early. Better yet, you'll improve your odds of finding the underappreciated home run stocks that provide the market's best returns.

The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." What was it that made Jobs so irate — and why could it make a few in-the-know investors some major profits over the coming months and years?

Where is the future growth for LVS coming from ?

    Vegas is deader than dead.

Macau, they have $3 Billion properties ready to open with no tables, unless they take existing tables from Sands macau, Venetian Macau, and FourSeasons. But then that's cannibalizing itself.

LVS alone has more legal problems than all the other casinos in the world combined.

Who in their right mind would invest in LVS ?

Pkylie, LVS is a large part of my portfolio and I'm very coherent.

    Why?

Because they are making tons of money in Macau and Singapore and will be opening in other areas of Asia.

Also, China will not allow anymore casinos to open in the near future.

And Adelson is the 7th richest man in the US and owns, with the insiders, 71% if the company.

I must tell you all corporations with tons of money have greedy attorneys (with their clients) wanting part of that money.

Vegas is dead, Pkylie???? You need to get out more. Vegas is only slightly ill from the crippling economy.

    Slightly ill... I like that.

Although most of LVS information spawns great hope in the gambling fiends of the world, perhaps I should point out that in Shanghi (third biggest city in China???I think.) LVS has a monoply. They are the only casino authorized to build and operate in Shanghi ( I think they have a bigger population than NY state???) for the next several years ( I'd love to quote the actual number of years but 6-7 years sticks in my mind. Gooey thing that mind). Sounds like a MASSIVE, MOATED, growth situation in the next world power. That alone accounts for a HUGE amount of future income in a sealed environment, with NO COMPETITION! and the Chinese, who I greatly respect, are notoriously eager gamblers. There are several million there who don't even have to pay to go to Macau to have fun, they just have to catch a cab. How many millions of Americans go through a single casino, like Caeser's, in a year? It's not the only game in town in Vegas. However, LVS is the only game in Singaport. RAH LVS!
