Why Aren't PCs Growing Anymore?

The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which technology editor/analyst Andrew Tonner and technology analyst Evan Niu discuss topics across the investing world.

Gartner has released PC shipment figures for the fourth quarter and full year 2011. Apple continues to outpace the broader market by a wide margin, while HP's strategic missteps continue to cost it market share. Dell's shipment also shrank but not as much. The mobile revolution continues to grow at breakneck speeds, driven by increasing adoption of smartphones and tablets.

Apple is riding the revolution. However, the company is just one way to play this amazing opportunity for technology investors. The Motley Fool has a just released free report on mobile named "The Next Trillion Dollar Revolution" that details a "hidden" component play inside mobile phones that's also absolutely dominating the exploding tech market in China. Inside the report, we not only describe why the mobile revolution will dwarf any other technology revolution seen before it, but we also name the company at the forefront of the trend. The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." What was it that made Jobs so irate — and why could it make a few in-the-know investors some major profits over the coming months and years?

Enter your email address below to find out what made Jobs so enraged!

Evan, how do you explain Intel's PC Client Group's revenue growing 17% YoY for both Q4'11 and for the year? You mentioned Apple's Mac sales jumped 20%, and Macs do have Intel Inside, but that can't account for all of the growth Intel conrinues to gain. 17% growth in PC client sales is a far cry from Gartner's gloomy picture of a 1% shrinkage in the PC market. Those chips are ending up somewhere. How come there continues to be this huge gap between Gartner's fantasy and Intel's reality?

    jdwelch,

I definitely agree that there's a disconnect between Gartner's total market shipment estimates and the individual results of each company. Also, this video was actually filmed about a week ago prior to the results last night. Intel is putting up some solid numbers in its PC Client Group, and I'm looking forward to perusing the actual 10-Q once it's filed since it will have a more detailed breakdown of the results.
