The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which editors/analysts Brendan Byrnes and Andrew Tonner discuss topics across the investing world.

In today's edition, the guys look at American icon General Electric, as well as Alaska Communications, a telecom company. Brendan likes GE due to its increased focus on its core energy and infrastructure segment, as well as the steps it has taken to reduce risk at its GE Capital unit. He thinks the company's 3.5% dividend is much more sustainable now for the long term. Andrew calls Alaska Communications a sell due to its heavy reliance on land lines, a dying business, and the fact that Verizon may be eyeing the Alaskan market.

If you'd like to extend your search for a high-yielder beyond these two stocks, The Motley Fool has compiled a special free report outlining our top 11 dependable, dividend-paying stocks.
