Research In Motion was a surprising feel-good story after serving up a much smaller deficit than Wall Street was expecting. The smartphone pioneer also impressed the market by closing out the quarter with 2 million more BlackBerry users than it had three months ago. Some cynical analysts were braced for a decline given the growing popularity of iOS and Android devices.
Allscripts Healthcare Solutions popped on Friday after "people familiar with the matter" told Bloomberg that the health records provider has hired an investment banker to explore the sale of the company.
Rambus shares soared earlier in the week after receiving a favorable court ruling in a patent infringement case that dates all the way back to 2000.
New Oriental Education moved higher after an Oppenheimer analyst wrote that the Chinese provider of educational services is cooperating with an SEC investigation of a subsidiary's financial statements.
InterDigital got a boost after the patent-rich digital wireless specialist was added to the S&P MidCap 400 on Friday.
