Is Wearable Computing the Next Big Thing?

The smartphone boom is a story already told, at least in the Western world. The tablet explosion can't last forever. So what's the next big thing in personal computing?

One popular answer is wearable computing. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) got into the game long ago, in a sneaky under-the-radar fashion, in the sub-specialty of health and exercise trackers. Early attempts like Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) Glass and Sony's (NYSE: SNE  ) smart watches might just be a sign of bigger (or is that smaller?) and better things to come.

In the following video, Fool contributor Anders Bylund explores the next megatrend and its implications for investors. In short, ignoring wearable technology and machine-to-machine communications is a very bad idea.

Apple has a history of cranking out revolutionary products ... and then creatively destroying them with something better. Read about the future of Apple in the free report, "Apple Will Destroy Its Greatest Product." Can Apple really disrupt its own iPhones and iPads? Find out by clicking here.

Thanks Anders, I was with you until the "contact lens" comment. That will never happen. I've noticed, perhaps you have too, people hate contact lenses. Lose them, eye irritation, cost etc, Many barriers to entry. How about throwing a few company names out there?

But no joke....I think you're right on on the money. The mega trend is data and more data...via tech. We can sample 1000 years ago, 100, 10 and now and the trend accelerates toward more data, more connection, more efficiency (faster, smaller) is this likely to stop? Are we at some magical point that says..."we've come far enough?"'ll continue....except faster.

It's happening in all the areas subject to digital analysis and manipulation. Biomed/genetics, robotics, etc.
