Can the Mario Brothers Fix Nintendo's Wii U?

Nintendo's (NASDAQOTH: NTDOY  ) Wii U console is on the ropes heading into the holiday season. Sales hardly rebounded this summer from the glacial pace they set in the spring, even though the game maker released some highly anticipated first-party titles.

In the video below, Fool contributor Demitrios Kalogeropoulos says that a lot is riding on this month's release of Super Mario 3D World, which needs to do well in order to pave the way for later launches in the Wii Party and Wii Sports franchises.

So let's see. He doesn't use sales figures to make a point comparing the Wii U to the 360 and PS3. He calls Wind Waker, Wind Walker. New Super Mario Bros Wii is more comparable to New Super Mario Bros Wii U. Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 for the Wii will be more along the same lines as Super Mario 3D World. What another great job by the Motley Fool. I mean, just wow, nominate them for an award.

Wii Sports Club is already out, at least for tennis and bowling. I should know, since I'm already kicking everyone's butt at tennis. Get the game, go online, and I'll probably kick your butt too. This is exactly what I wanted Wii Sports to do, since no one would play me at home because I was too good. Plus, playing on a split screen sucked. This is so much better. Just wish they had tournaments...

And the main problem with the Wii U is that they released it a year too early. Now that they've got more games, including Sports Club and Wii Fit U, it's finally getting some use around my house. And I'll definitely be getting the new Mario 3D game.

Mario will be big, but I can't believe you've not mentioned Wii fit U and the impact it's had on sales in Japan. Seems like a half assed bit of reporting.

Um... both games Mario 3D is paving the way for are already out. If you are going to write an article it wouldn't kill ya to do some research. And Mario 3D is completely different experience than the Mario Galaxy series.

Wii sports and wii party did come out before the Mario 3D world game. President Iwata's investor presentation last month mentioned that Nintendo had a target for wii party of "towards the end of the year," but maybe he was talking about a different market:

In any case, management sees Super Mario 3D World as critical to getting the system back on track.

As Iwata put it, the game is "the key title," and "a central pillar" to the strategy for a holiday rebound. So there's definitely a lot of hope built into the release later this month.

Bundles of the wii sports and wii party games should help too this holiday season, too.

And it is Wind Waker, my mistake!

Authors really need to stop all the uninformed, misleading garbage about Nintendo. Nintendo had a niche market that needs to be filled. They dont have to be number 1. They still make a profit.
