Electric cars and fuel cells continue to excite plenty of investors looking for the Next Big Thing in autos. But automakers continue to pour big efforts into technologies that seem much more mundane, but still have the potential to have a substantial impact on the environment -- and on automakers' profits.
One such technology that is getting a great deal of attention lately: turbocharging. Companies like Ford (F 0.69%), which has seen big sales with its EcoBoost line of efficient, turbocharged engines, have shown that the internal combustion engine still has the potential to offer green gains at a reasonable price.
Now, several other automakers, including both Toyota (TM -3.23%) and Honda (HMC -2.21%) have announced that they'll be diving into turbocharging in a big way.
