2 Important Things Microsoft's Surface 2 Is Still Missing

Since its launch a little over one month ago, investors have wondered whether Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Surface 2 tablets will prove to be a winner for the tech behemoth.

To be sure, Microsoft made big strides improving the Surface 2's hardware over its predecessor. But in the video below, Fool contributor Steve Symington worries Microsoft's latest tablet is still lacking both a meaningful app ecosystem and a significant number of interested buyers -- two crucial things that Microsoft's competitors already have.

After all, remember Apple  (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) already sold 14.1 million iPads in its most recent quarter, and Amazon.com  (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) just announced last week's holiday-shopping weekend was the best ever for its Kindle devices, with its relatively low-priced Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch tablets being the best-selling items on all of Amazon.com.

To get Steve's full take on why things don't look quite as promising for Microsoft's Surface 2, check out the video below.

I think Microsoft needs to act much more aggressively. When Google wanted to compete with Apple, they offered Android for free with open source. This strategy has proven to be successful. There is no doubt Microsoft Surface 2 is a great product, but for it to actually gain market share, Microsoft needs to sell it much more aggressively. It should price it at $399 incl. the type cover. If that's the case, 50% of people will give up iPad and buy Surface.

Microsoft on a PC has billions of applications. Windows makes sense but on a tablet the lack of applications is a catch 22 for Microsoft. No one will port to the Surface because no one owns one and no one owns one because there are no applications on it to speak of. Microsoft needs to get to work coding up some great apps to put on that thing fast!
