Netflix Announces Start Date for New Original Series

Hot on the heels of its much-talked-about House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, and not to mention the continuation of cult show Arrested Development, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) will roll out a new original series in mid-summer. Orange Is the New Black will debut on July 11, and like its fellow Netflix series, a full season of the show will be made available immediately via the company's streaming video service.

Orange is a comedy-drama centered on young, well-off New Yorker Piper (Taylor Schilling), whose association with a drug runner lands her in jail. The series was created by Jenji Kohan, who also serves as its executive producer. Kohan is best known as the creator of the popular Showtime series Weeds, which finished its run last year.

What little I've seen of Orange is the New Black looks very interesting; I'll be checking this one out, for sure. House of Cards is a blockbuster, Hemlock Grove is also good, although I liked House of Cards better. Clearly, Netflix has a knack for exclusive programming. Too bad it has to be so costly; I hope the company is able to realize a profit from all the hard work.

unclefweddy, you're definitely on target about those series being pricey. They're aiming for the top, with name showrunners and talent... and that doesn't come cheap. Have you read my Foolish colleague Tim Beyers' piece on the estimated costs of the series? It's quite an interesting read http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2013/04/30/the-michael...
