On April 20, Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) released earnings for the first quarter ended March 31.

  • While the housing slump remains a concern in North America, strength in international markets, coupled with advantageous commodity prices, pushed revenue ahead 7% compared with 2006.
  • Profits were hurt by a rise of $207 million in core operating costs and a slight increase in the tax rate.
  • The Motley Fool CAPS community seems to have a bullish attitude because Caterpillar has been given a four-star rating. Among the competition, CNH Global (NYSE:CNH) ranks a star behind, while AB Volvo (NASDAQ:VOLV) isn't so hot with just two stars. Share your take with thousands of other investors here.
