Warranty protection covers items that break or need repairs within a set amount of time after you buy them. If the product's warranty has expired, you're normally out of luck. But that may not be the case if you paid with a Chase credit card, because eligible items qualify for Chase extended warranty protection.

Extended warranty protection is a common perk with the best credit cards, and most of the cards in Chase's lineup offer it. That means you won't need to pay extra when a store offers to sell you an extended warranty, because you'll already be covered. To help you make the most of Chase extended warranty protection, this guide will explain what it covers and how to use it.

How does Chase extended warranty protection work?

Chase extended warranty protection adds a year of coverage to eligible original warranties of three years or less.

You must pay for the item, or a portion of it, with your Chase card. Purchases made with your Chase card's rewards also qualify. If you make an eligible purchase using Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you'll get the extended warranty benefit.

The coverage limit is the original price of the purchase, minus any shipping and handling fees, up to a maximum of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

What's covered?

Chase extended warranty coverage applies to the following:

  • Eligible items with a valid original manufacturer-written U.S. repair warranty of three years or less
  • Eligible items purchased outside the United States, as long as they have either a valid original manufacturer-written U.S. repair warranty of three years or less, a store-purchased dealer warranty, or an assembler warranty
  • Gifts purchased with your Chase credit card that have an eligible warranty and meet the terms and conditions of this benefit

What's not covered

Chase extended warranty service doesn't cover everything. Items that aren't covered include:

  • Motorized vehicles, including boats, automobiles, and aircraft, as well as their equipment and accessories
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Used or pre-owned products (refurbished items do qualify if they have a warranty and wouldn't be considered used or pre-owned)
  • Computer software
  • Rented or leased items
  • Medical equipment

Your Chase extended warranty protection will only pay for costs covered under the terms of the original warranty. For example, if you buy a new laptop, the warranty would generally cover any hardware problems you didn't cause, such as a defective battery. If you spill coffee on it, warranty coverage doesn't apply. The same rules apply with a Chase extended warranty.

Every warranty specifies what it does and doesn't cover in its terms, so you can read yours to clear up any confusion.

If you're not sure which card to choose, try seeing if you can prequalify for a Chase credit card. This gives you an idea of cards you're likely to get approved for with the card issuer.

Chase cards that have extended warranty protection

Here are other Chase credit cards that offer extended warranty protection:

As you can see, plenty of Chase cards provide extended warranty coverage. Some charge an annual fee, but there are also quite a few no annual fee cards on the list.

How to file a claim

To file a Chase extended warranty claim online, visit Card Benefit Services. If you want to file by phone, call 1-800-874-7702. Certain Chase cards have different phone lines for extended warranty claims, which you can find in your guide to benefits.

You must file your claim within 90 days of the product's failure. If not, your claim may be denied.

During the claim process, you'll receive a claim form. You should also get information about where to get your product repaired. You may need to provide documentation, which can include:

  • Credit card statement showing the last four digits of your Chase card and that the purchase was made on this account
  • Copy of the itemized sales receipt
  • Copy of the original manufacturer's warranty
  • Description of the item, its serial number, and anything else that's needed to substantiate the claim
  • Original repair estimate or bill with the cause of failure

Return the completed and signed claim form along with any required documents within 120 days of product failure. Again, your claim may be denied if you fail to do so.

If your claim is approved, your item will be either repaired or reimbursed. Remember that the maximum amount will be the original purchase price on your credit card receipt, minus shipping and handling. There's a limit of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

Extended warranty coverage is one of many Chase credit card benefits. Like purchase protection, another valuable extra, you get it with just about every Chase card. These features may not get as much attention as rewards and sign-up bonuses, but they're still an important part of evaluating the best credit cards and picking the right one for you.

Choosing a credit card

FAQs

  • Chase extended warranty protection provides an additional year of coverage to original eligible warranties of three years or less. The item will have the exact same warranty coverage for an extra year.

To receive this benefit, you need to pay for at least a portion of the purchase with your Chase card or rewards from that Chase card.

  • Chase's extended warranty doesn't cover all purchases. For example, it doesn't cover motorized vehicles, items intended for resale, computer software, and medical equipment. You can see more of the purchases that aren't covered in your Chase credit card's guide to benefits.

  • To file a Chase extended warranty claim, visit its Card Benefit Services site. Sign in to your account or, if you don't have an account yet, create one using your email address and card number. Once you've signed in, you can file your claim.

Alternatively, you can call the claims phone number found in your Chase card's guide to benefits.
