One of the most talked-about credit card concierge services is offered by American Express. The Amex concierge is known to handle all kinds of requests, from the simple to the outlandish. (Terms apply.)

While the concierge alone may not be worth a high annual card fee, it's not something that should be discounted entirely. Keep reading to see what an Amex concierge can do.

What is the Amex concierge?

The Amex concierge is a bit like a personal assistant. They can help you save time by completing research or tasks on your behalf. (Terms apply.) This could include:

  • Making reservations: The Amex concierge can help you get reservations at a hard-to-book restaurant -- or just your favorite local joint. They can also help you get reservations at your favorite spa or book tee times at a golf club.
  • Buying tickets: You can have the Amex concierge find and purchase tickets for all kinds of events, from sporting events to concerts to Broadway. Your Amex concierge may even be able to score tickets to shows or events that may otherwise appear sold out.
  • Shopping and gifts: An Amex concierge can help you find the perfect gift -- and get it delivered. From flowers to fashion, an Amex concierge can probably have it sent to your front door.
  • Travel inquiries: Want to know more about an upcoming destination? Looking for things to do on your next trip? These kinds of queries can often be handled by your Amex concierge. This could include putting together a basic city guide, or doing research into your specific itinerary.

Anything travel-related beyond basic inquiries will likely be referred to Amex Travel. It's there you can plan and book travel, including buying airline tickets or booking hotel stays. And while your concierge may be able to help you book a car service or taxi, rental car requests will typically be sent to the Amex Travel team.

Which cards have access to the Amex concierge?

Many credit card companies that offer concierge service do it for a wide range of their credit cards. Any Visa Signature cardholder, for instance, can take advantage of the Visa Signature Concierge service.

But with Amex, concierge access is far more exclusive. In fact, you can only choose a credit card from a small handful of options if you want access to the Amex concierge. Three personal cards and one business card are included:

The invite-only American Express Centurion and American Express Business Centurion Card also come with concierge access. However, unlike the normal Amex concierge service, the Centurion concierge service takes it up a notch. For example, Centurion cardholders can receive their own dedicated concierge. So, each time you have a request, you can contact the same concierge for a more personalized service. (Terms apply.)

What does the Amex concierge not do?

Although Amex concierges can accomplish a lot of things, there are some things they simply can't do. For one thing, they'll politely decline any illegal -- or indecent -- requests. (If you wouldn't ask your mother to do it, you probably shouldn't ask an Amex concierge!)

Additionally, as mentioned above, your Amex concierge isn't who you contact to book travel or accommodations -- you want Amex Travel for that. You also won't use the Amex concierge to redeem your Amex Membership Rewards points.

Finally, Amex concierges are not credit card customer service agents. This means they can't help you with account issues. And you won't contact them to pay your Amex credit card bill or to report credit card fraud. You'll need to contact a regular Amex customer service agent for these tasks.

How to contact the Amex concierge

To use the Amex concierge service, all you need to do is call. Once you're connected with an agent, simply make your request.

You can contact an Amex concierge by calling: 1-800-525-3355

You can also dial the number on the back of your Platinum card and select "Concierge" from the menu. Amex used to offer concierge service through email, but this was discontinued Aug. 18, 2021.

If you want to book airline tickets, hotel rooms, or rental cars, you'll need to contact Amex Travel. You can do this through the American Express Travel website, or by phone.

You can contact Amex Travel by calling: 1-800-297-2977

Is the Amex concierge free to use?

There is no service fee to use the Amex concierge. However, the costs and fees for any purchases made or services contracted on your behalf will be charged to your Amex credit card. So, if you use the Amex concierge to order flowers, there's no fee for the concierge, but the cost of the flowers (and delivery) will be charged to your card.

How long does it take to get answers?

The time it takes to get an answer from your Amex concierge will depend on the complexity of your request. Simple questions can often be answered right away. More complicated questions or requests could take 48 hours or more to be completed. For example, pointing you to the nearest gas station could take minutes. On the other hand, tracking down a hard-to-find item or putting together detailed research on a destination could take several days.

Choosing a credit card

Don't you wish you could take a peek inside a credit card expert's wallet sometimes? Just to see the cards they carry? Well, you can't look in anybody's wallet, but you can check out our experts' favorite credit cards. Get started here:
