Embrace Pet Insurance Snapshot

Pricing

Embrace offers some of the lowest premium prices we've come across for pet insurance.

Discounts

Embrace automatically awards a 10% multiple pet discount for folks insuring more than one pet. The company also shows its appreciation for military members -- active and former -- by offering another 5% off their premiums. The military discount is good in all states except New York and Tennessee.

Perks

The biggest perk offered by Embrace is covering a pet whether it needs preventative care, is ill, or has been in an accident.

Customer service

In addition to an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Embrace has received a healthy 4.3 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot.

Full Embrace pet insurance review

Pros

  • One of the most comprehensive pet policies on the market
  • Discount for multiple pets
  • Added discount for members of the military
  • Diminishing deductible

Cons

  • Doesn't offer full coverage to pets 15 years old or older
  • No refunds if you don't use all funds paid into a wellness plan
  • Covers only dogs and cats
  • Annual maximum payouts apply

Top perks

Healthy Pet Deductible

Each year a pet remains healthy and no claims are paid, the pet owner's deductible drops by $50. Say you have a $200 deductible. By year four, you have no deductible. At that point, it resets, and the $50 off per year perk starts all over again.

Wellness Rewards

Most pet insurance covers accidents, injuries, and illness. All those other expenses -- like annual checkups, boosters, spaying and neutering, and heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives -- are not covered. By tacking Wellness Rewards onto their policies, pet owners can save money every year of their pets' lives.

Embrace Pet Insurance helps pet owners protect their pets, from head to tail. For example, while things like dental cleanings and root canals are often paid entirely by the owner, Embrace offers coverage of up to $1,000 a year, with no dental exam required. The company covers serious conditions like cancer as well as chronic conditions like arthritis or diabetes. In other words, very little is left out. As the company says, "We cover pretty much everything, except pre-existing conditions."

What could be improved

Annual maximum payouts

When a pet is diagnosed with a serious condition, veterinary costs can be astoundingly high. The same is true when a pet is injured in an accident or attacked by another animal. While some pet insurers have no annual maximum payout, Embrace does.

Dogs and cats only

Rabbit, snake, bird, and other exotic animal owners are out of luck when it comes to Embrace Pet Insurance as the company only insures dogs and cats.

May leave money on the table

While wellness coverage can save the average pet owner hundreds of dollars each year, any funds paid into that particular rider stay with the insurer if not used.

Pricing

The table below shows the average cost of insuring a pet. But it varies a lot, because the number depends on four things: The age of the pet, the level of coverage, the deductible, and which reimbursement rate works best for the pet owner's budget.

Average cost for dogs $38/month
Average cost for cats $17/month
Deductible levels $300, $500, $750, or $1,000
Reimbursement rates 70%, 80%, or 90%

Alternatives to consider

If you want pet insurance that covers exotic animals like birds, snakes, and rabbits: Nationwide shines where Embrace doesn't. But keep in mind that Nationwide policies tend to be more expensive.

If you want a pet insurance company that offers coverage for alternative therapies for your pet: Healthy Paws may be a better option. However, Healthy Paws premiums tend to run a bit higher than premiums offered by Embrace.

Policy options

Accident

Embrace's accident-only policy covers physical injuries not caused by illness. For example, if a pet is hit by a car, is attacked by another animal, or eats something poisonous, that's covered. Accident-only coverage is also an option for pets 15 or older who are not eligible for a full insurance policy.

Accident and Illness

As the name suggests, this policy covers nearly everything but pre-existing conditions. Whether a pet gets sick, needs surgery, or is hurt in an accident, this policy helps pay to get them back on their feet. Well, okay -- back on their paws.

Wellness

In addition to illness and accidents, a Wellness Rewards policy pays for things like an annual checkup, boosters, and other preventative care.

Discounts

Multi-pet

A pet owner who insures two or more pets automatically receives a 10% discount.

Military

Former and current members of the military receive 5% off their policy premiums. It's possible to stack discounts for even bigger savings.

Application process

Embrace offers online quotes, making it easy to compare their rates to those of other pet insurers. If the quote looks good, enrolling is as easy as answering a few online questions. Embrace requests the pet's health records from a vet, and once that's taken care of, the pet is covered. Pet owners who prefer to get the ball rolling by phone can call (800) 511-9172. While on the line, a potential customer can also ask for details about how Embrace pet insurance works.

What types of pets are eligible for Embrace pet insurance?

Dogs and cats are currently the only pets Embrace covers.

Customer service and ratings

Embrace enjoys an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and enough 5-star reviews on Trustpilot to be considered "excellent."

This pet insurer is a good choice for:

Embrace pet insurance is best suited for people who:

  • Want head-to-tail coverage for their pets
  • Are looking for generous discounts

Exotic pet owners may want to consider Nationwide if they need coverage for a pet other than a dog or cat, or Healthy Paws if they're interested in pursuing alternative therapies for their pet and want those therapies to be covered.
