Making the World
Smarter, Happier, and Richer
Through expert investment guidance

“What’s in a Name?”
The Motley Fool’s name comes from William Shakespeare’s play “As You Like It”. The court jester, known as the Fool, could speak the truth to the king and queen without having his head lopped off. The Fools of yore entertained the court with humor that instructed as it amused. More importantly, the Fool was never afraid to question conventional wisdom. In the same way, we aim to speak the truth about money and investing...and to make financial guidance accessible to people of all backgrounds and experience levels.
Who We Are
At The Motley Fool, our purpose is to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. We help millions of people around the world achieve their financial goals every day. We believe in treating every dollar as an investment in the future you want to create. We believe that investing in great businesses, for the long term, is the most effective path to wealth. We strive to fulfill our purpose by truly serving every Fool, from our employees to our members to our community. That’s why in all our work, we endeavor to follow the “Golden Rule” of treating others as we ourselves would wish to be treated.
What We Do
The Motley Fool provides free and premium investing guidance and jargon-free financial education to millions of individual investors around the world on Fool.com. Here's how we do it:
- Premium membership investment services that deliver expert stock recommendations from seasoned Motley Fool investment analysts, in-depth stock analysis and investment research, long-term investing strategies based on investing time horizon and risk tolerance, AI-powered investment tools, portfolio diversification guidance, retirement and financial planning resources, and live-streaming video programming during market hours.
- Free stock market analysis and investment education including earnings reports coverage, stock charts, investing trends and insights, commentary from contributing stock analysts, and hundreds of articles published each week.
- A powerful investing community built by individual investors for individual investors, where members don't just use our services, they become Fools (with a capital "F"). We believe that just because you're an individual investor doesn't mean you should invest alone. Members of The Motley Fool investing community exchange stock ideas and lessons from investing mistakes, debate which early-stage growth stocks will become tomorrow's household names, interact directly with Motley Fool analysts through live Q&As, and connect at exclusive events like FoolFest.
Whether you're a beginner investor learning how to buy stock for the first time, a retiree looking for dividend-paying stocks for supplemental income, or an experienced investor pursuing strategies like options trading and tax-loss harvesting, The Motley Fool makes investing accessible, actionable, community-driven, and fun.

The Motley Fool is a “virtual first” workplace. Most Fools get the majority of their work done remotely. Our physical office spaces (in Alexandria, Denver, Sydney, and the Gold Coast) are collaboration hubs, providing a purposeful approach to office work rather than antiquated requirement that you show up to an office every day. At The Fool, we believe people should have the freedom to follow their passion in roles they love. We work hard to understand the needs of our employees and deliver for them. We are confident that this, in turn, makes a great business. Take care of your employees, and they will take care of your customers, who in turn take care of shareholders. We think every company should do the same.

Our Foolish History
The Motley Fool was founded in 1993 by brothers Tom and David Gardner as a traditional print newsletter in a backyard shed in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1994, an April Fool’s joke designed to teach an investing lesson put The Motley Fool on the map. Since those humble beginnings, Tom and David, and the community of Fools they’ve gathered, have been leading the charge for individual investors everywhere.
