On Thursday, March 8, convenience-store operator Casey's General Stores (NASDAQ:CASY) released third-quarter results for the period ended Jan. 31. Here are the quick and dirty details.

  • Total sales grew 16% as same-store gasoline gallons improved 4% and total gallons sold advanced 15%. Grocery and merchandise comps improved an impressive 7%, with total sales up just more than 15%. Prepared food and fountain comps jumped an even nicer 12%, while the total increased 19%
  • Diluted earnings grew 62% as margins improved along with the strong sales trends.
  • Management expects to acquire 50 convenience stores and open another 10 by the end of fiscal 2007. As of quarter end, it was already near its goal.
  • Casey's carries a four-star rating in the Motley Fool CAPS intelligence database, as does archrival The Pantry (NASDAQ:PTRY). Grocery store operator Kroger (NYSE:KR) also has a sizeable convenience store business but only a three-star CAPS rating.
