On May 30, Jo-Ann Stores (NYSE: JAS) released earnings for the first quarter ended May 5.

Earnings improved, but were still negative, as the fabrics and crafts retailer lost $1.7 million.
- Total sales fell 0.1%, but same-store sales were up 1.8%, thanks to an easy comparison. And those sales were more productive, as the gross and operating margins improved.
- The company expects to earn $0.55 to $0.65 per share for the year -- right around the estimates of $0.60 per share.
- Jo-Ann Stores is a one-star stock (out of a possible five) in Motley Fool CAPS.
