The first Whole Foods Market, a small, natural foods grocer with only 19 employees, opened in Austin, Texas, in 1980. Since then, Mackey has grown Whole Foods Market both organically and through acquisitions to help bring the natural and organic foods niche to the mainstream. It's now a serious player on the grocery landscape, with nearly 300 stores in North America and the U.K.
In addition to his leadership of Whole Foods, Mackey is a co-founder of FLOW (an organization that seeks to use entrepreneurship to increase social good) and author of Passion and Purpose: The Power of Conscious Capitalism.
