As an investor, it doesn't pay to follow the crowd.

In this series, though, we highlight a possible exception -- the collective wisdom of our CAPS community. Read the next section if you're unfamiliar with our methodology. Skip it if you want to go straight to the results.

Why this crowd is different
Jumping into a stock because your rich neighbor did, or because you heard about it from your friend's uncle who used to work on Wall Street, or because CNBC has been talking about it nonstop is a recipe for disaster.

If there's one thing I've learned as a stock analyst, it's that any stock can be gussied up to sound like a world-beater. If there's a second thing I've learned, it's that being a smart person doesn't make you a good investor.

In the hands of a smart person with good communication skills, the never-were and never-will-be stocks sound like tickets to instant fortune. The ancient Greek philosophers made the distinction between rhetoric and knowledge. The former is convincing; the latter is true.

That's why we factor in track record in our Motley Fool CAPS community. We invite everyone to give stocks an outperform (i.e., a "buy") or underperform rating (i.e., a "sell") in CAPS. We then use those opinions to calculate a rating for each stock -- from one to five stars (five being the best). But -- and this is a big distinction -- we give more weight to the opinions of folks whose picks have performed well in the past.

The No. 1 telecom buy
So, with that methodology as prelude, I present to you the number one telecom-related stock (and the top runners-up) based on the number of CAPS members who have rated the stock an outperform. I only included stocks that are consensus buys (i.e. that have a four- or five-star rating).

The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." What was it that made Jobs so irate — and why could it make a few in-the-know investors some major profits over the coming months and years?

vz is a great stock but not worth paying over $27 a share.these high dividend stocks tent to trade in a tight range and at the moment vz is close to its top...

AT&T is the real number one telecomm buy, though it doesn't have 4 stars or more, it does have a slightly higher dividend yield and a much greater track record. AT&T still generates a ton of cash from the iPhone and has the only iron clad, truely tested smartphone network.

For the price, have to agree withactionjo; AT&T is better priced for the money at the moment despite its dependency on the I-Phone. As forVZ, have to agree withplange01 too, VZ is too high, it will come down - if you can time your purchase below $27 a share you'll get a good buy. With VZ, however despite its position in the US it has a very high payout ratio and other standard indicators call into question its long-term ability to keep the high dividend payout. Remember, Verizon Wireless (its cash cow if you will) is owned 45% by Vodaphone (VOD). The time is soon near div.'s will have to be paid out to VOD with long-term debt paid down by the wireless division. Where is this $$ to come from in a overly mature domestic market in a long term recession???

Better play on VZ is VOD. Or for diversification and greater growth (and risk) Spain's Telefonic (TEF).

As someone who is counting the days until my contracts with VZ are finished (both personal and work), I could not buy VZ due to really poor customer service and poor policy. I won't go into detail but can't buy stock when I can't stand the product/services.

I think picking a stock based on number of CAPS outperforms is a bad idea. The data table likely indicates that VZ is the most followed telecom on CAPS, and says nothing about its earnings potential.

Also, I suspect you could make more money investing in a foreign telecom. That said, my holding in MTNOY hasn't done well yet.

    @drborst,

Size and popularity certainly influences the number of people who rate stocks in CAPS. That's why it's important to look at the CAPS ratings, not just the sheer number of outperform, underperform, or total calls.

That said, take all CAPS data for what it is...it's the collective wisdom of our community, for better or worse. I find the information to be a data point to consider along with the rest of my research on a stock.

    Fool on,

Thanks Anand and other fools. Good MF article and thoughtful comments. I learn much from reading Motley Fool articles and member comments. I plan to continue this practice. As you say Anand, the CAPS data is a starting point with 4 and 5 stars hinting at the best opportunities for gains.

Individual fools must do their own homework to improve chances for prosperity. Better Business Bureau warns people to investigate BEFORE you invest. I have owned 5 star CHL and made some profits. I'm still looking and learning. Fool on for profits.
