Cell Therapeutics' Shares Popped: What You Need to Know

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of biopharma specialist Cell Therapeutics (Nasdaq: CTIC  ) leapt more than 16% today on huge volume.

So What: So what? That may be just about the extent of it here. Without any apparent news driving the stock's move today, we're likely just seeing the typical volatility of a penny stock. There has been some recent coverage on bullish trading on Cell Therapeutics' options, so that could be having an impact, along with the options expiration coming up tomorrow.

Now What: Unexplained moves like this can bring a flutter to bulls' hearts, but in the long run, they're relatively meaningless. The primary focus for investors should continue to be whether the company can save its pixantrone cancer drug and keep its head above water. Leave the blips like this to day traders and penny-stock pumpers.

    There is news for CTIC ~ at least two European companies are showing considerable in the cancer drug and the calls placed today are incredible. FDA has until the end of the year to consider a reversal and has not yet taken a stance. It it's anything like a jury - the longer they wait to make a decision, the more likely the verdict will be a good one.

    10/23 - recently read that one biotech analyst speculates there is going to be a merger between ctic and snss -- snss has also request a stock offering just a few days after ctic had one approved. Take a look at insider trading (buying like crazy). Something is up here, folks.
