"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," the company wrote. "Steve's brilliance, passion, and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

Here at The Motley Fool, our thoughts go out to the family he leaves behind. Tonight, as we process the news, we wanted to open up a forum to share quotes, stories, links, and observations from the community. Please sound off in the live blog we've opened up below:

The Steve Jobs Betrayal
You may already know that in the final year of his life, Jobs revealed a stunning betrayal — and told his biographer, "I will spend my last dying breath... and every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong." What was it that made Jobs so irate — and why could it make a few in-the-know investors some major profits over the coming months and years?

Enter your email address below to find out what made Jobs so enraged!

Steve Jobs had vision that reached beyond Apple.

In a joint statement, Pixar's John Lasseter and Ed Catmull said: "Steve Jobs was an extraordinary visionary, our very dear friend and the guiding light of the Pixar family. He saw the potential of what Pixar could be before the rest of us, and beyond what anyone ever imagined."

"Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was to simply 'make it great.' He is why Pixar turned out the way we did and his strength, integrity and love of life has made us all better people," the statement continued. "He will forever be a part of Pixar’s DNA. Our hearts go out to his wife Laurene and their children during this incredibly difficult time."

I usually do not participate on-line eulogies, but in this case I feel the world has lost a great innovator and his family, as all families experience, one of the most important parts of their unity and strength. May Steve Jobs rest in peace and his family find the strength to carry on without him.

He changed the world in a very real way and was always thinking about what is next. How many companies would be wildly successful with just a little of his creativity, foresight, and respect for the entire working team (or family, as Steve put it)? The power of such a leader is what's behind Apple's success.

I will miss this man I never really knew, but every time I use my iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and whatever is next, I'll think of him, if only for a moment.

May whatever comes after be as good to him as he was to this world.

Losing Steve Jobs is a shock for me, like for so many; and more than I would have expected. He is/was one of those that make the cliche "Changed the world" so very true. I think we all owe him a lot for the quality of our lives. That's why we will miss him. Thank you Steve.

In a rush to finish a deadline project at the end of the day, I hadn't seen the news online yet. As I was leaving work, my friend told me about it. I stopped mid-step going down the stairs to process his words.

As I think most of us did, I knew that his time would be coming in the near future, but I did not expect it anywhere this soon. I am surprised at just how sad I feel at his passing. Somehow, it isn't merely a news story to move past, it feels personal.

I've never met the man. While I am a shareholder, I'm not even an Apple products user! I don't own a Mac, an iPod, an iPad, nor an iPhone. Perhaps, nonetheless, it is the very iconic nature of his life and vision that has impressed itself on me, I don't know. But I feel as though I've lost a friend.

Interesting. My eyes are tearing up even as I write this. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

The world has lost a light of great magnitude, may he rest in peace.

Steve Jobs had great long-term vision and a remarkable ability to blend form and function in a way most pleasing to us humans, but the other ingredient that made him truly special was the courage to stick to his vision whenever the bean counters came along and tried to say "you can't do that".

Without that courage, it's unlikely Apple would even exist today, much less be one of the world's largest companies.

    To my inspiration,

I understand that the silver/white apple may be more "attractive" than the rainbow one, but i believe that the colors stood for much more than that. Good and bad has been said about apple. However no one can deny that you changed the world of computers and just flat out of the world forever. Being only 13 I still ook up to you dead or alive because you took change to a whole new level. Innovation. The battle of PCs and MACS will go on for a long while, but to me, Apple is more than a computer. More than a big company or a cell phone provider, or even a technology producer. Apple is and will continue to be one man's open mind spread out to many more.

Steve Jobs you are my inspiration

    sincerely,

I wrote this in am email to the email id set up for people to send their thoughts and prayers for Steve.

We carried his children, his brains, his ideas in our pockets, hands, bags, luggage.

Now we will forever carry him in our hearts.

I understand your emotion, @havefunsaving. I found myself sobbing when I heard - I had no control.

What I find amazing is - even detractors of Apple have no problems with him being compared to Edison and Einstein, called a great inventor of our times. Just goes to show, when you're good, love you or hate you, we have to acknowledge your genius.

He's brought the whole world so much closer to each other. I couldn't stop smiling and crying in my morning commute this morning just noticing how many people carried something with the logo on it on their person. Even if you're an Apple-hater, you have to admit that he forced others to innovate better products for you to use.

    So thank you, Steve.

    spiraks57,

Here was a man who took a salary of $1 per annum, works day in and day out. His company did not pay dividend. He did not go out campaign style like a politician to sell his products. He just explained them. He enjoyed improving his design. It was just that many people agreed with his tastes. He did not make money by wrecking the company. By enjoying what he was designing and improving, he happened to give jobs to a lot of people, whether employees, contractors, investors, consumers or just commentators. According to stan8331 above, he did not play to conventional accounting rules.

It is not common for one to survive by indulging in one´s hobby; but Steve made it. And in the process he nudged this civilization ahead. This is what we all shall cerebrate.

Just wish all members of every corporate boards understand.

"Steve Jobs Dies, Apple Products Stop Working"

Millions of Apple products, including iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Mac computers, suddenly stopped working on Wednesday when Apple founder Steve Jobs died of pancreatic cancer late that night. Apple issued a statement saying that they are working 'round the clock to devise and implement a solution, though they said it is proving difficult to devise and implement anything very successfully without their genius leader.
