TriQuint Shares Popped: What You Need to Know

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq: TQNT  ) have popped by as much as nearly 12% today as investors are optimistic on the company's inclusion in Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL  ) just-announced iPhone 4S.

So what: There's no official news out today, but I think it's safe to say that suppliers of the iPhone 4 are seeing some upside since the new iPhone 4S left many of the core components untouched, while upgrading key parts like the processor and camera. Fellow iPhone suppliers like OmniVision (Nasdaq: OVTI  ) , Cirrus Logic (Nasdaq: CRUS  ) , and Broadcom (Nasdaq: BRCM  ) are also enjoying gains today.

Now what: TriQuint shared the power amplifier module spot with Skyworks (Nasdaq: SWKS  ) in the AT&T version of the iPhone 4. However, the Verizon iPhone 4 released earlier this year notably lacked TriQuint parts after it was torn apart by iFixit. Despite the exclusion, analysts have still been optimistic that the company will make its way into the new iPhone. I happen to think that the iPhone 4S will resemble the Verizon iPhone more than the AT&T version, since it was released later, in which case TriQuint may not be included. Time will tell once the iPhone 4S hits the market and allows us a detailed look at its innards.

    Maybe this is why TQNT said 3rd qtr will be soft but 4th quarter will resume much higher growth. TQNT still sounds very bullish on future growth talking about capacity of 350 mil per quarter. Since at the same time they reduced guidance for the 3rd quarter and reaffirmed growth for the 4th qtr and beyond. IMHO together with their pristine financials the price is much to low.

    @curlyhead46,

    I'm with you 100% on OVTI's incredibly attractive valuation currently, as I've owned it for quite some time. I'm currently working on a thesis on why it may be the sole supplier for the iPhone 4S camera. Stay tuned for more to come!
