Should You Love This Dow Stock?: Microsoft

The following video is part of our "Motley Fool Conversations" series, in which technology editor and analyst Andrew Tonner and industrials editor and analyst Brendan Byrnes discuss topics across the investing world.

In this extension of the Fool's "Should You Love This Dow Stock?" series, Andrew and Brendan turn their attention to software heavyweight Microsoft. Microsoft is one of the best-performing Dow components year-to-date, largely as a result of several forward-looking moves by the company. And though it certainly has some positive momentum providing a nice tailwind -- and the still-dominant foothold in the software arena -- the company faces an uphill battle to entrench itself in the next generation of technology. Listen in to see what Andrew thinks of Microsoft's road ahead.

Oooo, Andrew, bad call, I think. MSFT is up 22.22% on my CAPS call so far, and up 11% in my portfolio (after commissions). The mobile race is just getting started, really, and I think it's too soon to say that MSFT is out of it. I think it's got a very good chance, especially teamed with Nokia, of making an impact on the mobile space, especially when you factor in Windows 8 later this year (tablets and Ultrabooks). They may not end up *dominating* like Apple and Google are at the moment, but I think they'll gain a decent share (but it'll take a couple of years). I've filed this article in my "Check Back" Favorites folder, so I'll revisit this article at the end of this year, and we'll see where MSFT is by then (and the end of 2013).

    Fool on!... :-)
