Ship Finance International was the New York Stock Exchange's biggest gainer, soaring 32% after posting better than expected quarterly results. The shipper also boosted its already-generous dividend.

Recent IPO Splunk -- the poster child of "big data" -- made "big money" for investors after Barclays initiated coverage of the tech upstart with an "overweight" rating.

Pacific Biosciences of California gained ground after an article in TheStreet.com's Stockpickr website touted the gene sequencer as one of five prime buyout candidates.

US Airways took off after JPMorgan Chase airline analyst Jamie Baker bumped the airline's price target from $14.50 to $17. The entire sector is benefiting from a sharp drop in gasoline prices in recent months.

Finally, Tudou posted strong gains after a strong quarterly report. China's second largest video-streaming website posted a narrower deficit than the pros were expecting on a hearty 77% surge in revenue. Tudou is in the process of being acquired by its larger rival, but buoyant fundamentals always come in handy in case a deal falls apart or the buyer starts to get cold feet.
