Continuing its effort to blanket the nation with fourth-generation wireless service, AT&T (T 1.30%) this week switched on LTE networks in eight more cities:

  • Annapolis, Md.
  • Denver, Colo.
  • Daytona Beach, Fla.
  • York, Pa.
  • Tacoma, Wash.
  • Milwaukee, Wisc.
  • Louisville, Ky.
  • Provo, Utah

AT&T has committed to offering LTE in more than 100 U.S. markets before the end of 2012. AT&T 4G LTE is now live in 88 markets. Verizon (VZ 0.88%) says it has LTE activated in 440 domestic markets.

LTE is a high-speed wireless technology for transmitting voice and data at broadband speeds. Most new smart handsets, including the iPhone 5, are designed to connect to these hyperfast networks.
