3D Printing News Investors Need to Know

3D Systems (NYSE: DDD  ) will be acquiring Geomagic, a company that provides 3D imaging software to scan physical objects into 3D CAD models. In this video, Motley Fool industrial analysts Blake Bos and Isaac Pino discuss why they like this merger for a number of reasons, including the talent that Geomagic will be bringing on board, and why this could be part of a larger trend, as the U.S. and U.S. companies focus on becoming the additive manufacturing world leaders.

3D Systems has been a longtime pick of Motley Fool Superinvestor David Gardner, and has soared 70.89% since he recommended it in June of 2012. David specializes in identifying game-changing companies like this long before others are keen to their disruptive potential, and helping like-minded investors profit while Wall Street catches up. Get up to date on 3-D printing everyone. Jay Leno prints his difficult-to-find collector auto parts using 3-D methods. This market is going to explode. Think of it. Perfect replicas of anything and everything you can imagine, 3-D. I'm just saying.

My concern with 3D printing is the exposure non-professionals may expose themselves to using this this technology. I worked for years in R&D on photopolymers. In other words a little uncured "plastic" could cause contact dermatitis. Additionally there is serious concern on some epoxies (bis phenyl) being estrogen mimics. We have not talked about the extra large particles plugging up the equipment. I believe it will take a long time to iron out these kinks so the non-technically trained user does not get exposed to some nasty chemicals.
